Port Douglas gets busy as tourism increases
Port Douglas accommodation consists of Backpacker hostels, Caravan Parks, Motels, Hotels and Port Douglas Apartment style accommodation from 2 star to 5 star. It is currently enjoying a healthy increase in tourism as more people are forced to holiday in Australia. The town itself is posted on the headland and is surrounded on three sides by water. As is normal in the tropics the wind is a constant companion most of the days, but if you can score a day when the wind is having a break and the water has time to settle, you will find the beach at Port one of the best in the sheltered tropical waters of Far North Queensland. The first time I came to Port Douglas was back in the 70’s and it was a backwater with only 170 people living here, I think most of them had escaped from the south. In the 80’s saw the building of the Sheraton Mirage by Christopher Skase and we all know about that little journey.
It did however put Port on the map and through out the 90’s it became very popular to all sorts of people. As time passed they moved on and with it went the glamour that is once had. Now it is a quiet, beautiful and incredibly friendly town that is ideal for family and couples holidays alike. Featuring great restaurants, pubs and bars. Must see things are the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rain Forest. Best times of the year is April to October.
Port Douglas being solely a tourist town relies totally on its standard of accommodation and it is over all fairly good through out, there is a few 4 star places that are excellent and are easy to find. Many of the accommodation places are a short walk to the beach and the town center.
A convenient and cheap shuttle bus system operates most of the time and you can easily access anywhere you want to get to if you done have a car.
